An immigrant has died following a fire at a shanty settlement in the San Jorge industrial estate in Palos de la Frontera, Huelva. Emergencies 112 Andalucía received reports at 9:00 AM, prompting a large response from police, firefighters and the Red Cross.
The Huelva Provincial Firefighters Consortium confirmed the blaze affected twenty shanties. Four firefighters from San Juan del Puerto attended the scene, though intense smoke initially prevented a judge from accessing the victim. The cause remains unknown.
This settlement, one of Huelva's largest, houses agricultural workers year-round. The tragedy follows a similar fatal fire in the province on 12 September and a major blaze at this same site in May 2023, which destroyed 120 shanties and caused one injury.
