Woman, 102, dies in Albacete flash flooding

A severe storm in Madrigueras has claimed the life of a centenarian after floodwaters reached one metre inside her home on Friday night.

A 102-year-old woman has died in Madrigueras, Albacete, after floodwaters exceeded one metre inside her home. The tragedy occurred during a severe storm on Friday, 2 October 2026, which saw emergency services rescue 90 residents as water levels rose rapidly.

The municipality recorded 142 litres of rainfall per square metre, with flooding beginning at 18:00. Streets were submerged under half a metre of water, dragging vehicles away. Authorities activated the METEOCAM alert at level 1 and issued an ES-Alert.

Overnight, the Civil Guard's USECIC unit reinforced emergency efforts while GEACAM teams began recovery work on Saturday. Although roads CM-316 and AB-105 have since reopened for access, the CM-3222 remains closed at kilometre 5 following the devastation.
