Renfe train drivers to strike this Thursday

The Semaf union calls for industrial action over safety concerns, leading the Ministry of Transport to mandate minimum service levels.

The Semaf union has called for a train drivers' strike at this Thursday, prompting the to establish minimum service levels. Under these mandates, 73% of AVE and Avlo high-speed services and 65% of Media Distancia trains will run.

Cercanías commuter trains will operate at 75% capacity during peak hours, defined as 06:00-09:00, 13:30-15:30, and 18:30-20:30, falling to 50% for the remainder of the day. The industrial action follows fatal accidents in and earlier this year.

Semaf cites non-compliance with February safety agreements, demanding new hires and better weather protocols. Renfe argues these claims exceed its competence, noting the issues were not included in the July collective agreement and involve external factors.
