Spanish PISA scores drop as top students decline

The latest PISA report shows a significant fall in Spanish academic results, driven by a sharp performance drop among top-tier students.

The latest PISA report reveals a significant decline in Spanish academic results, with high-performing students experiencing a drop more than double that of their low-performing peers. Data shows the top 1% of students lost 35 points in Reading since 2022.

Analysis by EsadeEcPol indicates that students from wealthy households saw greater performance losses than those from poor backgrounds. While the gap between native and immigrant students has tripled in three years, it remains smaller than the EU average.

This downward trend is most pronounced in the Basque Country, despite it having the highest educational investment. Although statistical equity has improved, this is primarily due to the sharp decline of top-tier results rather than gains by vulnerable groups.
