Zaragoza has been named the European Green Capital for 2028 by the European Commission. During a ceremony in Guimarães, the Spanish city secured the title on its fourth attempt, beating competition from Aalborg, Bielsko-Biała, Košice, and Porto for the award.
Mayor Natalia Chueca presented a candidacy featuring 150 specific actions, including plans to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 2008 International Exposition. The city will receive a 600,000 euro prize to support its ongoing environmental initiatives.
The win follows Zaragoza being named the 2027 European City of Sport and receiving the 2026 Accessible City Award. Recent green efforts include a pledge to plant one tree for every ticket sold at the Vive Latino festival, which held its fifth edition lately.
