The Generalitat of Catalonia has launched a climate control plan for 2,530 public schools, committing 2.5 billion euros until 2031. Led by Education head Esther Niubó, the project begins with a 100 million euro investment across 100 priority educational centres.
These initial schools, selected based on extreme temperatures and vulnerability, will be fully climate-controlled by the 2027/2028 academic year. The plan replaces obsolete heating with modern cooling, ventilation, and mechanical air renewal systems throughout.
A technical office will coordinate the works, which also cover 51 public residential care homes. Local councils can manage execution from 2027 with 100% reimbursement, addressing the fact that 26% of Catalan public centres were constructed before 1960.
