The 2025 Fertility Survey by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística, released on Tuesday, reveals that 15.5% of women aged 18 to 55 do not want children, up from 12.3% in 2018. Notably, the figure for women aged 35 to 39 has surged by 127% since the last study.
Among those surveyed, 24.2% of women under 25 reject motherhood, while 69% of all women desire at least two children. Reasons for childlessness vary; 42.4% of Spanish women and 37.4% of foreign women cite a simple lack of desire to be mothers as their motive.
The data highlights a gap in fertility goals, as 34.8% of mothers had fewer children than desired. Economic and labour issues were cited by 38.3% of men as barriers. Additionally, 6% of women used assisted reproduction, rising to 9.6% in the 40-44 age group.
