Madrid expands economic lead over Catalunya

National Statistics Institute data confirms Madrid held 19.95% of Spain's GDP in 2025 as wealth disparities with Catalunya continue to grow.

The National Statistics Institute (INE) released Regional Accounting data on 30 September 2026, confirming Madrid maintained its economic lead over Catalunya in 2025. Madrid accounted for 19.95% of Spain's total GDP, while Catalunya's share fell to 18.93%.

Catalunya has trailed Madrid since losing its top position in 2017, with its relative economic weight dropping by two tenths in 2025. Meanwhile, the Region of Murcia recorded the highest volume growth at 3.8%, repeating its performance as the 2024 leader.

Wealth disparities persist as Madrid's GDP per inhabitant reached 47,220 euros in 2025, 37.9% above the national average. This significantly outpaces Catalunya's 39,169 euros per capita, highlighting the continued concentration of output in the capital.
