Sánchez announces new housing decree for Spain

President Pedro Sánchez confirms a new decree law to regulate the real estate sector and prioritise residential use over tourism.

Spanish President Pedro Sánchez addressed an event in Barcelona on Monday, 28 September 2026, alongside Salvador Illa and Jaume Collboni. The leaders gathered for the presentation of a National Office of Foresight and Strategy study regarding life in 2050.

Sánchez confirmed that a decree law to regulate the real estate sector will reach the Council of Ministers this Tuesday. The legislation, which requires approval from the Congress of Deputies, faces differing positions from political partners Junts and Sumar.

The President prioritised residential use over tourism, urging administrations to boost affordable supply. President Illa backed limits to combat speculation, while Mayor Collboni defended the right to stay in the city through improved housing accessibility.
