Housing unions block Barcelona streets in protest

Activists demand the 'Maricarmen decree' for indefinite rental contracts ahead of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's visit to Barcelona.

Housing unions blocked several major streets in Barcelona from 07:50 on Monday, 28 September 2026. Protesters obstructed Avenida Meridiana and Creu Coberta, while others marched towards Diagonal. Police intervened to prevent a blockade at Passeig de Gràcia.

The demonstrations follow the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen in Madrid. The Sindicat de Llogateres is demanding the 'Maricarmen decree', which would ensure rental contracts are automatically renewed and become indefinite, to be approved by the government.

A surprise action was planned at Diagonal Metro station ahead of a 19:00 march to the Palau de Congressos. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is scheduled to attend an event there, as activists pressure the Council of Ministers to pass the decree this Tuesday.
