Spain calls snap general election for November

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez dissolves parliament and sets a 29 November vote following legislative defeats and nationwide protests.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced the dissolution of parliament at 9:00 AM on 5 October 2026. He has called for early general elections to be held on 29 November 2026, following a special Council of Ministers meeting convened to formalise the move.

The decision follows the failure of two housing decrees to pass on 2 October and widespread protests across Spanish cities. While the vote was expected in summer 2027, the official call will now be published in the BOE on 6 October to trigger the process.

This snap election adheres to Spanish Electoral Law, which mandates a 54-day period between the official call and the ballot. The move represents a significant shift in the political calendar as the government responds to legislative setbacks and social unrest.
