Spanish monarchs begin state visit to Finland

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia arrive in Helsinki to discuss NATO security and technology during the first Spanish state visit since 1989.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain arrived in Finland on Monday, 5 October 2026, for a state visit to Helsinki and Rovaniemi. President Alexander Stubb and Suzanne Innes-Stubb received the monarchs at the Presidential Palace for the historic trip.

The itinerary includes a business forum on AI and quantum technology, plus a visit to the Rovaniemi air base, home to NATO Forward Land Forces. Felipe VI will also meet Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and attend an Alvar Aalto exhibition at the Finlandia Hall.

This first Spanish state visit since 1989 highlights security ties following Finland's 2023 NATO accession. With a 1,340km Russian border, the region remains sensitive after recent jet interceptions, while Spain prepares to launch a new Polar Strategy.
