José María Aznar to visit Ceuta following border crisis

Former Spanish PM José María Aznar will visit Ceuta this Thursday following the mass entry of 80,000 migrants from Morocco in late July.

Former Spanish Prime Minister will visit on Thursday, 27 August 2026, according to the FAES foundation. The trip follows a significant border crisis in late July, which saw a mass entry of 80,000 migrants from neighbouring .

The FAES president previously visited the city in 2000. His foundation recently defended the Army's presence in Ceuta, contrasting with Pedro Sánchez's current strategy of collaboration with Morocco regarding the return of those who crossed the border.

Aznar’s legacy includes the 2002 Perejil islet crisis, where he ordered special forces to evict Moroccan gendarmes. He recently claimed in a documentary that he would have resigned if that operation failed, citing a lack of EU consensus at the time.
