Madrid issues ultimatum to evict Sol protest camp

The Community of Madrid demands the Government Delegation clear a housing rights camp at Puerta del Sol within 48 hours following damage.

The Community of Madrid has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Government Delegation to evict a protest camp in Puerta del Sol. Installed on Saturday, 26 September 2026, the site now hosts hundreds of people in tents outside the historic Real Casa de Correos.

Minister Miguel Ángel García Martín confirmed the regional government will file a contentious-administrative appeal and seek precautionary judicial measures if action is not taken. Officials reported graffiti and garbage thrown at the 250-year-old headquarters.

The occupation follows a housing rights demonstration linked to the Tenants' Union. Protesters demand the 'Maricarmen decree' after the eviction of an 87-year-old Retiro resident, highlighting the escalating tension between activists and Madrid authorities.
