Barcelona eviction suspended under new decree

A court in Sant Andreu has halted the eviction of a vulnerable tenant, marking the first suspension under the new Maricarmen decree.

An eviction involving a vulnerable woman with mental health issues in Barcelona's Sant Andreu district was suspended on Thursday morning. This marks the second attempt to expel the tenant in 2024, following a legal challenge by the Sindicat de Llogateres.

The court postponed the action to apply new decrees approved by the Council of Ministers, extending the eviction moratorium for vulnerable people until 2030. The tenant, who moved in during 2017, had faced rent hikes after seeking to register her residency.

This case is the first suspension under the Maricarmen decree. Despite attempts to regularise the rent, the owner reportedly offered a single-room contract, reduced electrical power, and threatened lock changes, highlighting ongoing housing rights disputes.
