Massive housing protest turns violent in Barcelona

Thousands marched in Barcelona on Monday to protest the housing crisis, leading to clashes with police and a camp in Plaza de Cataluña.

A major housing crisis demonstration took place in Barcelona on Monday, 5 October 2026. Starting at 20:00 in Plaza Urquinaona, the march saw 20,000 attendees according to the Guardia Urbana, though organisers estimated the turnout reached 120,000 people.

The protest followed the failure of housing decrees in the Congress of Deputies and the announcement of a general election for 29 November. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the event was postponed to Monday due to a red weather alert for heavy rainfall.

Violence erupted after 21:30 as individuals in balaclavas threw stones and rockets at police. Mossos d’Esquadra officers charged groups near Plaza de Cataluña, where containers were burned and arrests made. Tents remain in the square for a protest camp.
